ViewSonic ViewPad 10Pro and ViewPad 7x hands-on redux (video)

We've already fiddled with ViewSonic's two new tablets at Computex's pre-show event, but we decided to hit the booth earlier today to get a closer look at the ViewPad 10Pro's BlueStacks Android virtualization on Windows 7, as well as the ViewPad 7x's funky UI. Starting off with the bigger slate, you'll see in the above video that the Android implementation isn't as good as it sounds -- ViewSonic says it wants to offer an Android experience "similar" to that of actual Android devices, but alas, we beg to differ with the virtual Android's laggy performance plus its odd bugs. The reps assured us that the final product will be much smoother, but then we were further let down by the fact that Android Market is absent. The reason? It's simply because from ViewSonic's point of view the 10Pro's focus is on Windows 7, so the company decided that it wasn't worth all the hassle to obtain a Google Mobile Services license. To sum it up, this whole Android "feature" is very much just a gimmick, and it doesn't look like running native Android on Oak Trail soon will do much good, either.

On a brighter note, the dual-core ViewPad 7x fared way better than its bloated brother. This world's first 7-inch Honeycomb tablet ran surprisingly smooth, and we were glad to see SPB's contribution here with its Shell 3D Android launcher (which we reviewed with much praise a little while back). We managed to get ViewSonic director Max Liu to give us a brief demo of the 7x after the break, and to be frank, the more we look at it, the more we want it. Here's hoping that this tablet will be priced right.

Oh, and did we mention that ViewSonic had a few real Gouldian finches on the show floor? Check out them birds after the break.Continue reading ViewSonic ViewPad 10Pro and ViewPad 7x hands-on redux (video)ViewSonic ViewPad 10Pro and ViewPad 7x hands-on redux (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 31 May 2011 14:21:00 EDT. Usher, Ke$ha And More Help Dance Music Go Pop In 2010

But is it here to stay? Our music-industry experts weigh in.By Akshay Bhansali

In 2010, pop princesses, R&B icons and chart-dominating newcomers all danced to the same beat. Not only did dance music go pop, but pop music caught the club-music bug.

Between Katy Perry's "Firework," Ke$ha's "We R Who We R," Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)," Enrique Iglesias' "I Like It," Usher's "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" and "OMG" and countless other singles, established artists definitely looked to dance beats for surefire hits. And two of this year's biggest success stories in music were Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz; could there be a soul left in this country who hasn't heard "Dynamite" or "In My Head"?
The love went both ways, with dance music's biggest stars finding mainstream success this year. Dance-music maestro deadmau5 took up house-artist duties at this year's VMAs, and Swedish House Mafia and Usher teamed up for a medley of their gems at the American Music Awards.
So how did this happen? We caught up with some music-industry experts to get their takes.
"You definitely saw tempos go up this year," Jon Caramanica of The New York Times told MTV News. "And I think what you had are a lot of producers who are really familiar with nightclub stuff. They are familiar with Europe. Things are happening on a more global scale now."
"I think everything from Europe, and sometimes even Asia, it comes to America, and we just adopt things a little bit slower," said Jared Eng of JustJared.com. "I think it was just a change. People like different types of music at different times. And dance was of this moment."
Noah Callahan of Complex magazine added: "I think 2010 saw the merging of the pop and dance genres. Pop artists realized that there were best practices that could be borrowed from dance music. And, ultimately, [all] pop music that has been made in the past 20 years had ended up being remixed for the club by dance artists. I think they basically just cut out the middleman and went straight there."
Dance music being introduced into the hip-hop and R&B realms was particularly notable this year.
"I think David Guetta kind of at the end of last year and the beginning of this year spearheaded it," said freelance writer Julianne Escobedo Shepherd. "He produced a lot of tracks. I think as trends go, people revile 'unst-unst.' But it's just coming back around. Big-room techno was a way for people to get decadent in a year that no one could get decadent."
"You have someone like will.i.am, who's like, 'Well, I spent all this time in Ibiza, and this is what they are doing,' and he wants to find a way to bring that into his music," Caramanica said of the Black Eyed Peas mastermind. "R&B especially became dance music. And especially with your Jason Derülos, Taio Cruzes. Guys like that would have literally been blocked at the border two years ago. That would not have made it through customs. And now all of a sudden they have #1 songs. I think will.i.am had a lot to do with that last year."
Elliott Wilson of RapRadar.com added: "It's actually even affected hip-hop. I was talking to Q-Tip, and his next record, I feel like that's gonna kind of go in that vein. I know that was also Jay-Z's thought process with Blueprint 3 at first, that he wanted to make a little bit more of a world music [vibe], a little more dancey. I think the kids today want to go to the clubs. They wanna have a good time. They wanna dance. So I think the artists of today are trying to kind of feed that audience."
"I think it's caught on this year because the people who've done it have been successful," offered Clover Hope of Vibe magazine. "Like 'OMG,' with usher, he didn't have success until he made a dance record. He had 'There Goes My Baby' and these really, like, adult-contemporary records that didn't really catch on. And then once you see that everybody is doing it and that people are liking it, they are like, 'OK, let me just try this out.' It's like Auto-Tune. Like, 'Let me see what I sound like on a record by David Guetta.' They end up liking it and doing more of it."
So does the club-music trend have staying power. According to our tastemakers, not so much.
"I do think it's a blip," Caramanica said. "I don't think that's gonna be something that lasts in America. I think this is gonna be a moment we'll all look back on and go, 'Wasn't that weird when Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz had #1 records?"
"At some point, these R&B artists will get kind of sick of it and be like, 'Let me go back to my soul background,' " Hope said. "When you actually have to say something, dance doesn't really lend itself to substance. And I think that R&B artists, they really want to talk about love and in a deep way, and to do that, you need to do, like, a soul or a traditional R&B record. I want to say that it's kind of a fad."
"I think music is very cyclical," Eng offered. "So I think dance music might be here for a little bit, but I'm sure it will phase out at some point."
Wilson called dance music "the sound of today. I think that people want more aggressive, faster beats, and I think that that probably has legs until at least next summer."
What do you think? Is dance music here to stay? Let us know in the comments!

GNOME 3 released, ushers in an interesting amalgam of iOS and OS X

GNOME 3, after more than two years of development, has been released into the wild. GNOME 3 is not merely the logical successor of GNOME 2: it is an entirely new project, started from scratch, to create a "completely new, modern desktop designed for today's users and technologies."

The best way to check out GNOME 3's new features -- and it has lots of new features -- is to run a live version of openSUSE or Fedora, or simply head over to the GNOME 3 website and watch the (rather pretty) introductory videos. If you want a synopsis, though, here it is: GNOME 3 looks a lot like Mac OS X, with a healthy dollop of iOSesqueness for good measure, but yet it still somehow retains an underlying feel of Linux.

The overall aesthetic is very simple, very elegant, and despite being slightly out of fashion, there are plenty of rounded corners, too. The main addition, workflow-wise, is the addition of an app-launcher-cum-alt-tab screen, where you can launch apps, or flip through your open windows. For a complete list of the new features and changes, check the GNOME 3 release notes.

Despite GNOME 3 being officially launched, there aren't actually any releases for existing, stable Linux distros -- it's the live CD/USB images, or Ubuntu users will have to wait for the launch of 11.04 for a GNOME 3 PPA, but it will break Unity in the process. Fedora users will have to wait for for the May 24 release of Fedora 15. Of course, if you're feeling crazy, you can always build GNOME 3 from source.GNOME 3 released, ushers in an interesting amalgam of iOS and OS X originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 06:40:00 EST. Cliqset Founder Takes On Personal Publishing And Social Conversations With Stealthy Startup Glow

As we heard last fall, Cliqset, a FriendFeed like social aggregation platform, was shut down by its founders, Darren Bounds and Charlie Cauthen. Cliqset, which launched in 2009, was a high-powered social syndication and aggregation service, with the ability to post and syndicate content on Cliqset, Facebook, Twitter, Google Buzz and 80 other sites and networks. You can read our prior coverage of Cliqset here. As Louis Gray wrote last November, the startup was one of the first networks to implement Pubsubhubbub for real-time updates, and Salmon for cross-network comment posting. But despite these technologies, the service couldn't attract an active number of users and landed in the deadpool. It looks like Bounds is on to his next project?Glow.

Bounds writes that Glow is his "personal attempt at building a social network that doesn?t sacrifice simplicity, features or user-experience in an effort to promote decentralization, user privacy and data ownership." The site, which is in stealth mode for now, will combine personal publishing ans social conversation.

Alaska Airlines ditches paper flight manuals for iPads

The iPad has already gotten the go-ahead from the FAA as a replacement for paper flight charts and maps, and now Alaska Airlines has become the first major US airline to hop on board the paperless bandwagon. While it's not quite ready to ditch paper navigation charts just yet (though that is under consideration), the airline has announced that it will be replacing its traditional flight manuals with iPads, which will be loaded up with the GoodReader app and PDFs of 41 different manuals and other materials. According to the airline, that change will result in savings of about 2.4 million pieces of paper, and it says the cost of the project will be offset by fuel savings from the reduced weight, and additional savings that are expected from "fewer back and muscle injuries caused by pilots carrying flight bags," which can weigh up to 50 pounds. Let's just hope those newly lightened flight bags still have room for a charging cable.Continue reading Alaska Airlines ditches paper flight manuals for iPadsAlaska Airlines ditches paper flight manuals for iPads originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 28 May 2011 11:34:00 EDT. Konstruct for iOS creates generative augmented reality art with your voice

If you have an artistic temperament, but you weren't blessed with steady hands or an eye for color, Konstruct might be the app for you. Not only does the iPhone app let you produce generative art using words, warbles and whistles, but it also uses augmented reality to bring your artistic creation to life.

To get started, you first need to print out the Konstruct marker and place it wherever you'd like to create your AR sculpture -- it could be on your living room wall, or on the floor of your bathroom, it doesn't matter. Open the app, point your iPhone at the marker, and start making some noises! Once you're done, you can save your creation, or simply wipe the slate clean and start again.

The volume of your voice affects the size of the shapes that are drawn on the screen, and you can move your head around to alter the path of your 'brush' -- but to change the shape of your brush or modify the color palette you have to use a menu. Without knowledge of the app's internal workings, it's hard to say what the actual difference between whistling, talking and singing is -- and judging by the developer's affinity for whistling in the demo video (after the break), the app probably doesn't perform that much analysis on your input.

Still, Konstruct is just a prototype! A later version could do away with menus and rely entirely on the location, tonality, quality and amplitude of your voice -- and judging by the the words of the developer, James Alliban, there is definitely more in store for Konstruct: "The idea of transforming entire cities into user generated virtual art galleries really appeals to me. I see Konstruct as an early prototype that will hopefully be realised in this form in the future."

Beyonce Reveals 4 Album Art, Release Date

The pop diva is sultry and scantily clad on the cover of the album, which will hit stores on June 28.By Jocelyn Vena

Beyonce's <i>4</i>

Who says Beyoncé retired Sasha Fierce? On Wednesday night, the music video for her new girl-power anthem, "Run the World (Girls)," premiered on "American Idol," and now Beyoncé is looking just as sexy and empowered on the just-unveiled cover art for her upcoming album, 4.
In the photo, which was posted on Beyoncé's website, the singer sports only a fur vest, thick gold cuffs and smoky eye makeup as she looks off into the distance. The album will be released on June 28. According to a press release, Beyoncé recorded the LP over the span of a year, beginning the project in spring 2010 and wrapping up in the spring of this year.
"I recorded more than 60 songs; everything I ever wanted to try, I just did it," she recently told us about the album. "I started off being inspired by [Afrobeat music pioneer] Fela Kuti. I actually worked with the band from 'Fela!' [the hit Broadway musical based on Kuti's life] for a couple of days, just to get the feel for the soul and heart of his music; it's so sexy and has a great groove you get lost in. I loved his drums, all the horns, how everything was on the one. What I learned most from Fela was artistic freedom: He just felt the spirit."
Fela wasn't the only artist that influenced the music on 4, though. "I also found a lot of inspiration in '90s R&B, Earth, Wind & Fire, DeBarge, Lionel Richie, Teena Marie," Beyoncé said. "I listened to a lot of Jackson 5 and New Edition, but also Adele, Florence and the Machine and Prince. Add in my hip-hop influences, and you can hear how broad it is. I also gave myself more freedom to really belt out some songs, and bring soul singing back. I used a lot of the brassiness and grittiness in my voice that people hear in my live performances, but not necessarily on my records."
What do you think of the cover art for Beyoncé's upcoming album? Share your opinions in the comments.

&#8216;Bigfoot&#8217; says Barnett is rude and a butt kisser

Josh Barnett is outspoken and brash. It rubs a lot of people the wrong way. That included Dana White. Say what you want about Barnett, but he's not stupid, so when Zuffa purchased Strikeforce, the former UFC heavyweight champ swallowed his pride and finally worked to bury the hatchet with MMA's leading man.
That and just about everything else about Barnett seems to bother fellow heavyweight Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva.
"[...] when [Barnett] sees Fedor, [UFC President] Dana White or [UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo] Fertitta, he runs to them and stays by their side all the time. He makes me sick. He's the classic kiss-ass, a rude man …" [Silva told Sherdog]. "I really want to face Barnett and I've already said I consider him a filthy person, even though he is a great fighter, and that I'll beat him up and close both of his eyes."
Silva suggested Barnett is rude and snooty when it comes to Brazilian fighters.
"I've been fighting since 2004 and have never had any issues with another athlete, even the most stuck-up," explained Silva. "Friendship, for me, is everything, but Josh is a weird guy, a guy who doesn't greet you when you enter the elevator, doesn't even say 'good morning.' It's how he treats Brazilian fighters especially. It's the same thing with [Barnett and] Werdum."
Barnett faces Brett Rogers on June 18 in Dallas. With a win over Fedor Emelianenko, Silva advances to the semifinals of the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix. Silva is awaiting the winner of Alistair Overeem and Werdum on that same card.

Pedrosa Uncertain About Collarbone Surgery, Doubtful For Barcelona

The crash which saw Marco Simoncelli collide with Dani Pedrosa, earning Simoncelli a ride-through penalty and Pedrosa a fractured collarbone, has added another chapter to Pedrosa's long litany of injuries. Pedrosa fractured his right collarbone in the crash, just seven months after he broke his left collarbone in a crash at Motegi, and a month after surgery to remove the plate inserted after Motegi.

The aftermath of that Motegi crash is having an impact on the treatment of Pedrosa's broken collarbone at Le Mans. When Pedrosa returned to racing after Motegi, he suffered symptoms of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, including numbness and a lack of strength in his left arm while racing. Fortunately for the Spaniard, after extensive examination, it was found that the problem was being caused not by nerve damage - which could have been career-ending - but by the plate somehow constricting the blood flow to his left arm caused by the particular position of his arm when racing a motorcycle. After Jerez, Pedrosa had the plate removed, and those symptoms disappeared, though the surgery to remove the plate left Pedrosa with muscle cramp and post-operative pain.

If you're in the U.S., you can now score local savings at participating merchants by checking in with Latitude. Google will also be offering "status deals," which users can unlock by visiting a particular merchant on a regular basis. Jones interview: &#8216;Guys Choice&#8217; awards show appearance on tap as the champ deals with highs and lows of stardom

A hero just eight weeks ago around UFC 126, Jon Jones is experiencing both sides of being a mega-star.
For the casual fan, he's been nominated for Spike TV's Guys Choice awards on June 10 (click on photo to vote). Jones is pitted against pound-for-pound boxing king Manny Pacquiao. Meanwhile, some hardcore MMA fans are worked up because Jones is sidelined with an injury. They're wondering why their hero is off until the fall.
"People look at 'Bones' Jones as being like their favorite Power Ranger," Jones told ESPN1100 in Las Vegas. "And their Power Ranger needs to be on because it's Wednesday night. I think people forget that my name is Jonathan Dwight and I'm very human, and I need to make decisions and choices. Sometimes people aren't going to going to get their Power Rangers show when they want it and how they want it."
Jones was expected to have surgery for a recurring hand injury, but that was canceled last week. Between cries that he ducked Rashad Evans and shots at his management, Jones has had to deal with some negativity.

After a final visit for another opinion, major hand surgery was avoided. That doctor told Jones the procedure was unnecessary and too risky for an athlete of his stature.
Using Twitter, his manager Malki Kawa tried to inform fans and the media about the change in plans. As a result, he's been eviscerated. This from Bloody Elbow's Brent Brookhouse:
Kawa is failing at his job. He is making a fighter who had built up a reputation as an unstoppable wrecking ball appear like he's going out of his way to avoid a fight with a guy who may be "in his head."
Headkicklegend's Matt Roth made it even more personal:
Unfortunately, Kawa is like many MMA managers. Ones who don't understand the sport or the press; only seeing the potential dollar signs they could make if they are successful. As a manager, Kawa isn't just under-qualified, he lacks any qualifications one usually associates to one in a managerial role. Lacking a college degree in any sort of relative field, he doesn't have a keen eye for business or contracts, nor does he have an understanding of proper PR work.
UPDATE: Kawa now says Jones is willing to fight Evans in October.
The issue is complicated. We don't know what sort of pain Jones experiences each time the injury re-appears. He clearly got some shaky medical advice along the way and fans should be happy he's not putting his career at risk.
In the end, it's not the worst thing for Jones to have some time off and build momentum towards future title defenses in late 2011 and early 2012. Appearances on "The Tonight Show" and the "Guys Choice" awards only add to his star power away from the Octagon.
The entire interview with Jones can be heard this Friday on ESPN1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas at 6 p.m. PT. "The MMA Insiders" radio show will feature Roy Nelson in studio along with Jones and Travis Browne. Listen here.

Analyst Argues Against Google?s Chrome OS Security Promises

Google made a couple bold statements about its upcoming Chromebook tablet, many of which have certainly excited consumers, particularly the promise of an end to security hassles. In the Chromebook launch announcement, Google claimed that ?Chromebooks have many layers of security built in so there is no anti-virus software to buy and maintain. Even more importantly, you won?t spend hours fighting your computer to set it up and keep it up to date.? Sounds nice, right? Well, Trend Micro?s security consultant Rik Ferguson vigorously disagrees, claiming that the search giant risks repeating the same security mistakes Apple made.

Ducati Press Release: Rossi Tests The Ducati At Mugello

As reported earlier this morning, Valentino Rossi spent the day at Mugello testing the 2012 Ducati Desmosedici GP12. The test had been laid on for Rossi to check the progress of next season's Ducati MotoGP machine, and test the updates made to the machine at the request of himself and teammate Nicky Hayden after the Jerez test back in April. Rossi also got to try out the new surface at Mugello, which he greatly approved of. Looking at the photos from the test (shown below), Mugello's brand new grandstand is also clearly visible, a marked improvement from the old grandstand at the circuit.

Ryan Couture video: Next gen Couture tries to build on family legacy

Ryan Couture is carrying the torch for his family now. The 28-year-old son of legendary Randy Couture is the only family member actively fighting. His father lost some teeth and his final fight at UFC 129. Couture, the former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champ, called it quits and has moved on to a career in movies.
RawVegas.tv tracked down Ryan to check on how he's doing in preparation for his third pro fight against Matt Ricehouse (4-0) at Strikeforce Challengers 16 in Kent, Wa.
Couture doesn't have a dominant skill like his father did, but because he started training in all aspects of MMA, he may actually be the more well-rounded fighter. There's a good chance he never reaches the heights his father did, but he's already off to an impressive start considering he only began working towards an MMA career in 2007.

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive hands on: surprisingly cool, but still US-only

When Amazon Appstore for Android launched last week, one of its primary features -- Test Drive -- was disabled just a few minutes after it opened. With no try-before-you-buy, no refund process, and 1-Click purchasing ready to strike at any moment, this caused some problems. Anyway, don't despair: Test Drive is now enabled.

Before you get your hopes up, Test Drive doesn't work with every app. The IMDb app works fine -- you can even watch movie trailers on it! -- but the Angry Birds games are sadly not enabled. Some games work surprisingly well, though, like Bubble Buster. There's very little latency, and the framerate is really rather good. The Test Drive experience is so true to life that you even get ads; how cool is that?Gallery: Amazon Appstore for Android Test DriveContinue reading Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive hands on: surprisingly cool, but still US-onlyAmazon Appstore for Android Test Drive hands on: surprisingly cool, but still US-only originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 12:30:00 EST. Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features

Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions -- like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements -- and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team's announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft's recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we've not seen any new benchmarks yet, we're curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

Borthwick: Paying Attention in the iPad Era

With today's announcement by Twitter CEO Dick Costolo of the Tweetdeck acquisition, the shape of the next layer of micro messaging begins to come into focus. What BetaWorks CEO and co-founder John Borthwick was calling hypothetical yesterday when we talked backstage at TechCrunch Disrupt is now a fait accompli, if it wasn't already so then. He described how Betaworks was at work modeling a desktop multi-column Twitter UI when Tweetdeck founder Ian Dodsworth popped up with a working app to invest in. But when I tapped on my iPad, Borthwick called it the device that changed everything.

If his kids stay out of trouble, &#8216;Rampage&#8217; may retire at 35

Quinton Jackson doesn't want to be like Roy Jones Jr. and countless other boxers who fight because they have to financially. The former UFC light heavyweight champ always targeted 35 years old as the time to walk away. Jackson, 32, still believes that, but there are some uncontrollable factors that could change the plan.
"I have kids to look out for. I want to put some of my kids through college. I know some of my kids ... I'm gonna need lawyers fees for them," joked Jackson. "Y'all laughing but I know this!"
Jackson was in a good mood as he spoke during today's final press conference for UFC 130. In spite of the talk that he's not motivated for this fight, he seems to have a new outlook on his fighting career. Jackson has benefited greatly from being able to earn a healthy living.
"My parents were real poor and I want my Mom to drive a nice car and have a nice house, and I want my Dad to have the same. That's the thing that drives me to keep fighting so I can afford to keep doing those things," said Jackson.
Rampage is starting realize he can lengthen his career by cleaning things up outside the cage. That could mean he fights past 35.
"When I used to fight in PRIDE, I was a single parent and I used to eat fast food all the time. I used have to cut 15 pounds every time before a fight. I really got sick of that over the years," Jackson said. "I'm sick and tired of that lifestyle, being real heavy."
Jackson knows it cost him a title shot earlier this year.
"I really regret getting real heavy after my November fight because I couldn't fight [Mauricio] "Shogun" [Rua] after Rashad [Evans] got injured. It was like a kick in the ass," said Jackson.
During today's presser, Jackson looked visibly thinner than before previous fights.
"I was really excited about getting in shape for this fight. When you look at yourself in the mirror and you're disgusted with yourself, and you're a professional athlete, that's bad," said Jackson.
Jackson faces Matt Hamill in the main event of UFC 130 on Saturday.

It's been an excellent spring for UFC light heavyweight Vladimir Matyushenko. First, he knocked out Jason Brilz in a mere 20 seconds at UFC 129. Two weeks later, after sitting through Zuffa's Fighters Summit, he got married.

IBM's Jeopardy-winning supercomputer headed to hospitals. Dr. Watson, we presume?

We always knew that Watson's powers extended well beyond the realm of TV trivia, and now IBM has provided a little more insight into how its supercomputer could help doctors treat and diagnose their patients. Over the past few months, researchers have been stockpiling Watson's database with information from journals and encyclopedias, in an attempt to beef up the device's medical acumen. The idea is to eventually sync this database with a hospital's electronic health records, allowing doctors to remotely consult Watson via cloud computing and speech-recognition technology. The system still has its kinks to work out, but during a recent demonstration for the AP, IBM's brainchild accurately diagnosed a fictional patient with Lyme disease using only a list of symptoms. It may be another two years, however, before we see Watson in a white coat, as IBM has yet to set a price for its digitized doc. But if it's as sharp in the lab as it was on TV, we may end up remembering Watson for a lot more than pwning Ken Jennings. Head past the break for a video from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, which, along with Columbia University, has been directly involved in IBM's program.Continue reading IBM's Jeopardy-winning supercomputer headed to hospitals. Amazon, Please Do Not Make The Kindle Touchscreen

I'm a big fan of my Kindle DX. It's literally my favorite gadget. I love the form factor, the large screen, the relatively good battery life and the keyboard. Amazon could eliminate any of those items and I my love would still be just as strong. The Kindle DX is perfect in my eyes. It's so perfect that just the thought Amazon ditching the buttons in favor of a touchscreen pains me as deeply as The Road.

That's the trend now: touchscreen e-ink screens. Within the last 24 hours, Kobo and Barnes & Noble introduced models with new touchscreen e-ink displays. It's a fantastic step in low-power consuming displays with really quick page refreshes and battery life. The new Nook has a 2-month battery. All good. Even the touchscreen is great technology with good-enough sensitivity. But I don't want it in my next Kindle.

Now Kimbo Slice wants to box an NFL player?

Kimbo Slice's rise from underground street fighter to network TV star was simply amazing. His fall hasn't possessed the charm, but it seems to have happened just as quickly.
After losing in the first round of the UFC's "Ultimate Fighter" and going 1-1 with the promotion, the man has simply fallen off the face of the earth.
Now we're confused about what he wants to do. Does he ever want to fight again? He's been mum on the topic. His original MMA promoters, The Shaws, continue to push for him to get back in the ring, but we wonder if the latest effort is only making Kimbo look foolish.
Jared Shaw is proposing a ridiculous boxing debut for the former streetfighting king. Shawtold MMAWeekly Radio:
"I'll tell you right now on the air, I've called Mike Riley to get in touch with Ray Edwards' people and I've made an open challenge to come fight Kimbo Slice. That fight I will deliver.
"If Ray Edwards wants to step up and fight Kimbo Slice I will deliver that to the public. There's two guys that come from athletic backgrounds, that haven't been in the ring that many times, so let's see two big boys bang it out. If Ray Edwards thinks he's a great boxer, then maybe he thinks he can go through Kevin Ferguson very quickly."
Edwards is a defensive end with the Minnesota Vikings. Much like Baltimore Ravens safety Tom Zbikowski, Edwards decided to make a little money during the NFL lockout by stepping into the squared circle. He hasn't made his boxing debut yet, but Shaw is calling him out, saying:
"Some people will call it a circus, but you can call it whatever you want. It's two guys who are willing to get in the ring and bang it out. I don't really call that a circus."
The 6-foot-5, 268-pound Edwards is slated to fight this Friday against a former kickboxer named T.J. Gibson.

HTML5 MP3 player lets you listen to your music library inside your browser

While this slick little HTML5 audio player might not pack all of the features of your favorite desktop media application, it's still a very cool demonstration of what a Web app can do with access to local resources -- like MP3 and OGG files.

Just fire up http://antimatter15.github.com/player/player.html in your HTML5-compatible browser and browse to the topmost folder in your music library. The app will quickly build an index of all your tunes and let you start listening right inside your Web browser. Click on the filter library text, and you can enter a search string -- results load as you type.

There's a volume control, shuffle mode, play/pause control, and you can click and drag to skip forward or rewind during playback. As OMG! Ubuntu points out, you can even save the app to your hard drive and run it offline, which is pretty darn cool.

Not all browsers are equal when it comes to HTML5 implementation, of course. We found that Chrome worked the best, and Firefox was OK. Microsoft files antitrust complaint against Google in Europe, showdown imminent

Microsoft, citing Google's tyrannical 95% share of the European search market, has lodged a formal complaint with the European Commission. It's not like Microsoft is breaking any ground here -- the European Commission has been investigating Google's alleged violation of European competition law since November 2010 -- but there's no doubt that the addition of Microsoft's gravitas will affect the proceedings.

Microsoft's complaint reads like a sincere and plaintive cry for help against the Google Overlord. Microsoft lists no less than six damning reasons why Google's behavior is anti-competitive -- from Windows Phone 7's incompatibility with YouTube, to its nefarious handling of Google Books -- and finishes with a wide-eyed plea to the European Commission to please find Google guilty.

For those of you that have been following Microsoft's own antitrust troubles over the last decade, don't worry: MS is quick to point out the irony in the situation. "There of course will be some who will point out the irony in today's filing. Having spent more than a decade wearing the shoe on the other foot with the European Commission, the filing of a formal antitrust complaint is not something we take lightly. This is the first time Microsoft Corporation has ever taken this step. More so than most, we recognize the importance of ensuring that competition laws remain balanced and that technology innovation moves forward."

It sounds like Microsoft, having well and truly gone through the wringer, wants Google to be held similarly accountable. That's fair enough, right?Microsoft files antitrust complaint against Google in Europe, showdown imminent originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 05:50:00 EST. Evans, Jones in altercation in Las Vegas nightclub

What happens when you bring every fighter on the Zuffa roster to Las Vegas in one week? Night clubs see a surge in patrons with cauliflower ear, and tensions between former-teammates-almost-opponents boil over.
UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones and Rashad Evans, the former champ who was supposed to fight Jones, ran into each other at Surrender, a club in Encore in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that the two nearly came to blows until welterweight champ and peacemaker Georges St. Pierre came between them and talked them down.
This is the latest chapter in their soured friendship. Evans and Jones trained together until Evans was injured before a planned title bout. Jones was given that bout, won the belt and then said he would fight Evans, going against what the two had previously agreed upon. Since then, they've had a war of words through the media that bubbled over at Surrender. Everyone was said to have left with a smile, so it must not have ruined their evenings.

What&#8217;s wrong with &#8220;The Ultimate Fighter&#8221; this season?

This season of "The Ultimate Fighter" seemed to have the recipe for a perfect season: exciting fights, coaches with a planned clash for a contender's spot, and a random mix of fighters. Unfortunately, this season has just fallen flat, and the sagging ratings back that up.
What is it about this season?
Kinder, gentler Brock: In the past, Lesnar has been a ratings juggernaut. With his WWE-crafted persona and legions of fans, the man is expected to bring eyeballs to the television. Except, this is post-near-fatal-sickness-and-loss-to-Cain-Velasquez Brock. This isn't the same man who got into Frank Mir's face after beating him. He is a humbled fighter who is trying to act as a coach. Is it endearing? Yes. Does it draw big ratings? No.
Even the dramas have no drama: Lew Polley getting fired. Len Bentley standing up to Brock. Keon Caldwell leaving the show. Chris Cope possibly backstabbing his team. These are all moments that could have been memorable moments in the season, but they are only memorable for being so boring. Even at the house, someone being loud is the biggest problem that's come up. I'm not advocating making up drama, but the show has editors for this exact reason. Make it seem interesting. This is a television show, after all.
No fight-in show: One of the best changes in the show's format over the years was the addition of the "fight-in" bouts in the seventh season. Fighters had to win a fight to get a spot on the show. Those first two episodes featured tons of exciting moments and gave an idea of how a contestant was going to perform. They didn't have that this time. Instead of starting the show with a bang, it began with a whimper.
Little interplay between Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos: Rashad vs. Rampage. Koscheck vs. GSP. Henderson vs. Bisping. Every recent season has featured some conflict between the coaches that not only provided exciting television, but made fans more excited for their upcoming bout. Lesnar and dos Santos have said some veiled remarks when not in each other's company, but that's it.
Welterweights ... again: This is the fifth time the show featured welterweights. With heavyweight coaches of this caliber, why not feature heavyweights? They've only been on twice. Then we'd at least get the joy of pointing and laughing at their piss-poor conditioning.
Little knowledge about the fighters: In seasons past, there has been more of a focus on the fighters backgrounds. We see little glimpses of that, like Ryan McGillivray's discussion of his daughter, but they are few and far between. Without a connection to the fighters, there is no incentive to care what happens to them from week to week.
We're 13 seasons in: Anything that's been done for 13 seasons with few changes will get stale. Something needs to be done to shake the show up because the way this is heading, there is little reason to care about season 14.
With quarterfinal and semifinal fights left to go, perhaps the show will pick up and become what it could be. Do you think it will happen? Tell us in the comments or on Cagewriter's Facebook page.

Lady Gaga Beats Oprah On Forbes Celebrity 100 List

Justin Bieber debuts behind the ladies at #3 on this year's power tally.By Gil Kaufman

Lady Gaga

Photo: Gabriel Bouys/AFP/Getty Images

Lady Gaga has had a good year. The evidence is pretty obvious: She's sold millions of albums and downloads, headlined a major world tour, made the cover of nearly every magazine and recorded one of the most anticipated albums in ages.
But what really says you're having the best year ever? Leaping over Oprah Winfrey on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list in the same year that the Queen of All Media launched a new network and wound down the most popular daytime talker in the history of the medium.

Lady Gaga topped the list released by Forbes on Wednesday, leaping four spots from last year on the ranking of entertainment industry power, fueled by earnings, media visibility and social media popularity. It's only the third time in seven years that anyone has moved past Winfrey on the list, and Gaga did it by earning $90 million from her Monster Ball tour, rolling up 32 million Facebook fans and becoming the first star to corral 10 million Twitter followers.
All those Little Monsters helped her sell 1 million digital downloads of the title track from the just-leaked Born This Way in five days. They also bought MAC makeup, Monster headphones and Virgin Mobile phones that were endorsed by Gaga (and featured in her videos). Her Monster Ball tour grossed $170 million from 137 shows; she's sold 15 million albums worldwide and has endorsement deals with Polaroid, Monster Cable and PlentyofFish.com. Also, a Russian billionaire reportedly paid $1 million to appear in the "Alejandro" video.
"Lady Gaga beat Oprah this year because of her social media power. She can use Twitter and Facebook to work the 'little monsters' into a frenzy that leads to record sales and media attention," Forbes editor Dorothy Pomerantz told Reuters. "She's the best example of how celebrities will need to manage their careers in the coming years."
With her syndicated "The Oprah Winfrey Show" ending its legendary run next week after 25 years, Winfrey didn't fall far to #2, thanks to estimated earnings of $290 million. Her wealth came in as a result of the fees from her show, as well as the programs from the stars she's created, including Rachel Ray and Dr. Oz.
Justin Bieber is the youngest person on the list, debuting on the tally at an impressive #3, courtesy of an estimated $53 million in earnings from concerts (which bring in $600,000 a night), music sales and the "Never Say Never" movie, which grossed close to $100 million at the global box office and is now out on DVD.
Irish rock legends U2 are at #4 with $195 million, mostly due to their 360 Tour, which became the highest-grossing tour in history last year, with estimated grosses of $700 million by the time it wraps up this summer.
At #5 is Sir Elton John, who grossed $204 million for 102 concerts over the past year. Rounding out the top 10 are disgraced golfer Tiger Woods, Taylor Swift, veteran Jersey rockers Bon Jovi, "X Factor" boss Simon Cowell and Miami Heat star LeBron James.
Other notables: Angelina Jolie (#11), list newcomer Katy Perry (#12), Johnny Depp (#13), Leonardo DiCaprio (#15), the Black Eyed Peas (#16), "American Idol" host and media mogul Ryan Seacrest (#24), former TV star Charlie Sheen (#28), Beyoncé (#29), Usher (#32), Muse (#34), Jay-Z (#38), "Idol" judge Jennifer Lopez (#50), Diddy (#52), Robert Pattinson (#53), Kristen Stewart (#63), Eminem (#71), Kanye West (#76) and Lil Wayne (#85).

Finally a little sun! Yesterday I went climbing in Burbage (specifically Burbage south boulders) in the Peak District near Sheffield. I’m really glad I’ve got these boulders within 15 minutes of my home.
Although in a climbing wall / gym I’m happy on 6a/6b the techniques on grit boulders are a different world: lots of smearing [...]

Now You Can Wear David Beckham's Underwear!

Wanna get your hands on a pair of David Beckham's skivvies? Well, it's about to get a whole lot easier to make that happen, as the soccer star sis creating his very own underwear line! And the best? The soccer stud will be modeling the new duds, as well.
"I can't wait to show people the collection -- although I'm not sure my mum will be too happy seeing a billboard image of me in underwear again," Beckham told Women's Wear Daily, referencing his scantily clad ads for Armani.
"With my team we have spent time working on the fit, the fabric and the style to ensure the product looks and feels the very best and I am hugely proud of the end result," Beckham said of his "bodywear" collection.
In addition to an underwear line, the the 36-year-old star is working on a new men’s fragrance from license partner Coty Inc. and a number of other projects. And let's not forget the most important project he and wife Victoria Beckham have in the works -- they are expecting baby no. 4 this summer!
But Beckham says, in a few years, when he's ready to put his soccer career behind him, he'll concentrate on establishing his name as a solid, full-blown brand.
"I have lots of ideas for my own collections that I'm looking into with my partner, Simon Fuller, but for now my focus is on bodywear ... It's important that with my team we take our time, to make sure that each product is thoroughly researched and then launched with the opportunity to succeed."
With this guy's level of appeal, David Beckham could put his face (and bod!) on a jar of dirt, and it's probably be a bestseller!

'Dark Knight Rises' Production Kicks Off With First Official Photo

Photo released by Warner Bros. features heavily muscled villain Bane, played by 'Inception' vet Tom Hardy.By Eric Ditzian

Tom Hardy as Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises"

Better late than never, right? We had hoped and assumed Christopher Nolan's third "Batman" flick was going to kick off production not too long after "The Dark Knight" wrapped up its record-breaking run in 2008. Instead, the filmmaker pushed forward with "Inception," and as even the most diehard Bat-fan must surely admit, Nolan's twisty dream-world thriller was quite a fine cinematic diversion.

Now though, principal photography on Nolan's third and reportedly final Caped Crusader flick — "The Dark Knight Rises" — has officially begun, with the production expected to span three continents, from India, Scotland and England to Pittsburgh, New York and Los Angeles. And to celebrate this highly anticipated beginning, Warner Bros. has released the film's first official photo and fired up a viral marketing campaign.
The photo features Bane, the heavily muscled villain played by "Inception" vet Tom Hardy. With Bane bathed in shadows, his back to the camera and a freaky mask on his head, the pic offers an excellent introduction to a character not very well known to the masses but one who is cherished by comic-book fans.
The Bane photo was the payoff of a brand-new viral effort that began with a muffled audio file on the film's official website. Savvy technophiles were able to analyze the audio and discover a Twitter hashtag (#thefirerises) and account, which in turn led to the discovery of a hidden image at Thedarkknightrises.com. Expect the marketing campaign to continue for quite a while — the film doesn't hit theaters until July 20, 2012.
"We're very much excited about really finishing a trilogy and giving a conclusion to our story," Nolan told us in February. "And that's what we're doing."
Check out everything we've got on "The Dark Knight Rises."

Google's CR-48 apparently shipping again, doing the prototype death rattle

Reports are trickling in that Google has begun shipping the CR-48 to eager testers who've thus far been empty-handed after signing up for the units back in December. Could it be? Is the plucky prototype Chrome OS laptop getting a stay of execution after being declared all dried up back in March? That's pretty unlikely, given the impending release of the Samsung and Acer netbooks that we saw announced during Google I/O. It seems a lot more plausible that the company is just exhausting the supply, so if you signed up late last year and haven't received one yet, we wouldn't recommend holding your breath.
