Beyonce, Jay Z Celebrate VMA Baby News Backstage

B gathers with well-wishers -- including her Destiny's Child girls and Kanye -- declaring 'I'm free!' after onstage pregnancy reveal.By Kara Warner

Another year, another unbelievably action-packed Video Music Awards. As expected, viewers were treated to mind-blowing performances and several jaw-dropping surprises. The most unexpected moment came courtesy of Beyoncé Knowles, who not so subtly announced to the world that she and husband Jay-Z are expecting their first child.

When B unbuttoned her sparkly jacket and rubbed her belly with a knowing smile, after which the camera panned to a visibly elated Jay-Z and Kanye West cheering from the audience, the Nokia Theatre was bursting with warm and fuzzy well-wishes for the soon-to-be parents. And that very public moment of celebration was just the beginning.
When Beyoncé returned backstage to her dressing room, she was greeted by a team of people who enveloped the visibly happy star with hugs, cheers and congratulations.
Click for photos of Beyoncé's big VMA night.
"I'm free!" she said to one of the well-wishers, indicating that she and Jay are thrilled to not have to keep such a big secret any longer. "We're all free!" she said to the group.
A few minutes after her arrival backstage, she was joined by her husband, a very excited West (whose first words upon entering the dressing-room area were "Where is Beyoncé?" as if he could not wait to give B a huge hug) and her former Destiny's Child ladies, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Even with the doors to their dressing rooms closed, the applause and whoops of joy could be heard everywhere backstage.
"That was an eventful night, to say the least," Jay, still smiling, said to some of the revelers in the hallway, who continued to shower him with congratulations and hugs.
The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards have wrapped, but the real action is just getting started! Stick with MTV News for winners, fashion pics, video and behind-the-scenes stories about everything that went down. Visit VMA.MTV.com for the latest.

Beyonce Will Be an "Incredible Mother," Says Kelly Rowland

Beyoncé gave an incredible performance of "Love on Top" at last night's Video Music Awards -- but it's the five seconds afterward, when she dramatically revealed her baby bump, that's got everybody talking! Though she flaunted her belly on the red carpet before the show, her post-performance tummy rub was the real "wow!" moment: We got to see hubby Jay-Z grinning ear-to-ear while pal Kanye West jumped up and down in excitement. Another friend who's thrilled for Beyoncé and her man: her former Destiny's Child group-mate Kelly Rowland.
"I have known for quite a while, and she's happy, and Jay is happy, and that's all that counts," Rowland told People.
Rowland, 30, also expressed confidence in Beyoncé's abilities as a mother. "I think she'll be an incredible mother, because she's always been motherly," said the singer. "I think that she takes after so many traits from her mother. And I just think it's going to be so natural for her. It's natural for her now!"
Beyoncs mother Tina Knowles ran her own hair salon while Beyoncé was growing up, then became the costume designer for Destiny's Child -- and still works with her daughters today. As role models go, Beyoncé could do worse!
While the pregnancy announcement was a cleverly-staged surprise, Beyoncé, who turns 30 on Sept. 4, has been forthright about her plans to have a family one day.
The diva has said in the past that she wanted to have a baby at 30 -- although in a June interview with Piers Morgan, she added, "But I also said I was gonna retire at 30. And I'm not retiring!" As for those baby plans, at the time she said, "Only God knows." Well, now the rest of the world knows too!
Watch Beyoncé's performance and baby-bump reveal in the VMAs clip below.

Banshee music player now works in Windows, supports Amazon MP3 downloads

A few moments ago, version 2 of the Banshee music player for Linux was released, bringing with it a whole slew of new features, and the addition of an official -- but alpha-quality -- Windows build. The Mac OS X build of version 2 is due later today.

The most notable new feature is support for the Amazon MP3 store -- you can buy and download music from within Banshee -- but unfortunately it's only available in the Linux build at the moment (OS X and Windows support are planned, however). There have also been some significant improvements to artist, album, and queue interactions -- and yes, you can finally right click a track, album or artist and select 'play after' to insert it into the queue.

Beyond actual playback, the user interface has been tidied up -- it now looks a whole lot smarter -- and the Ubuntu One Music Store and SoundMenu extensions have been made official. For a complete list of changes, additions and bug fixes, check the change log.

When Windows support initially appeared in February, we found it rough around the edges and fraught with stability issues. With version 2, Banshee for Windows is still a bit unstable, but it's shaping up to be a good alternative to Winamp, iTunes, or whatever other music library manager you use. It's almost as attractive as its GNOMEish brother, too!

Sony, Hitachi And Toshiba Make Their LCD Business Merger Official

Yesterday, we reported about Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba planning to establish a joint venture for small and mid-size LCD panels in Japan. And today, the three companies, plus major shareholder Innovation Network Corporation of Japan, made the plan official.

As reported, the semi-public organization will control 70% of the venture (to be set up by the end of the year), with the other partners holding a 10% stake each. Tentatively named "Japan Display", the venture will launch with a cool US$2.6 billion investment and instantly control 21.5% of the world market for small and medium-sized LCDs.

An Unusual Economy?

Thomas Sowell, Investor's Business DailyMany in the media are saying how unusual it is for our economy to be so sluggish for so long, after we have officially emerged from a recession. In a sense, they are right. But, in another sense, they are profoundly wrong. The American economy usually rebounds a lot faster than it is doing today. After a recession passes, consumers usually increase their spending. And when businesses see demand picking up, they usually start hiring workers to produce the additional output required to meet that demand. Some very sharp downturns in the American economy, such as in the early 1920s, were followed...

Facepalms of the week: ?Mayhem? and Bellator prospect arrested

It's been a while since Cagewriter has awarded the facepalm of the week award, but it's time to give it out for two fighters who were arrested recently.
The first one goes to Jason "Mayhem" Miller, the fighter who also hosts "Bully Beatdown" and will be featured as a coach on the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter." TMZ reports that he was arrested in North Carolina for false imprisonment and simple assault after he reportedly put his sister in a headlock and wouldn't let her leave a party.
The second, heartbreaking facepalm goes out to Rasul Mirzaev, a Russian fighter who was expected to make his American debut in Bellator this fall. He was reportedly arrested and charged in the death of a student in Moscow. Mirzaev allegedly was in a verbal altercation with the student and threw a single punch, which knocked the student out. He died four days later, and Mirzaev faces up to 15 years in jail.
In both cases, fighters used their physical skills outside of the cage against people who weren't equipped to defend themselves. A facepalm isn't strong enough to show disgust in these cases.

Facebook launches unified mobile site, announces 250 million mobile users

Facebook has announced that its two mobile sites -- m.facebook.com and touch.facebook.com -- have been unified, bringing a simpler mobile experience to Facebook users. And there are a lot of those -- a quarter billion, according to Facebook.

Smartphone users won't be losing any functionality because of the consolidation. If your phone supported the enhacned features offered by touch.facebook.com, the new site will automatically flip the switch when you visit.

Rolling the sites together helps simplify things for Facebook's developer team. Now changes can be pushed to a single site instead of two separate sites, which makes it easier to ensure that all mobile users receive a nearly identical experience regardless of the device they're using.

The new Facebook mobile can also check to see if your phone supports geolocation. If it doesn't, you won't be seeing much of Facebook Places -- which obviously relies heavily on geolocation. Images can also be optimized on the fly to keep page performance from suffering on less powerful devices. You can see the three different versions of the share button below, courtesy our friends at TechCrunch.

Ke$ha, Black Eyed Peas, More Featured In O Music Awards Roundtable Debate

Music-video director Wayne Isham will join Most Innovative Video debate, which streams live Monday on OMusicAwards.com and MTV.com.By MTV News Staff

Photo: Noel Vasquez/ Getty Images

Ever since they were first announced, the O Music Awards have proudly proclaimed themselves the untraditional alternative to the staid world of red carpets, acceptance speeches and celebrity glad-handing.
And for further proof of that point, consider the following: Though the inaugural O Music Awards won't premiere until April 28, the first award will be handed out on Monday at 4 p.m. ET ... and it's a big one.

For weeks, fans have been voting for the Most Innovative Music Video through the O Music Awards official site, and on Monday — in a roundtable debate moderated by MTV News' James Montgomery — a winner will be crowned.
The O Music Awards Debate for the Most Innovative Music Video, presented by FUZE®, will stream live on OMusicAwards.com and MTV.com. Joining Montgomery around the table will be acclaimed video director Wayne Isham, Mashable's Brenna Ehrlich and some super-secret celebrity guests.

The Black Eyed Peas, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and more will also take part in the discussion about just what makes a video truly innovative, and the folks who are nominated for the award — a list that includes Arcade Fire, Robyn, OK Go and Andy Grammer — will also Skype in to make the case for why their video deserves to be named Most Innovative.
On Monday morning, the original list of 10 nominees will be whittled down to the top five vote-getters, and then, during the debate, our roundtable and the Internet audience will cut that list down to the final three. At the very end, we'll announce the winner of the very first O Music Award for Most Innovative Video.
The inaugural O Music Awards will stream live from Las Vegas at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on OMusicAwards.com. Tune in to see who will reign supreme in categories like Most Viral Dance, Funniest Music Short and NSFW Music Video!

Chuckie Will Debut Michael Jackson Remix In Miami

Official 'Hollywood Tonight' remix coming to Miami Music Week.By Akshay Bhansali

Chuckie

Photo: Jason Ano/ One and Only Productions

Leaving the South by Southwest festival, Lavo New York and Las Vegas' Marquee in his wake, house DJ Chuckie has his sights set on the week ahead. With Miami Music Week now upon us, Chuckie plans to seize the opportunity to debut new material. Fans will be tickled to know the Dutch producer has tracks in the can with Kelly Rowland and T-Pain, but when MTV News caught up with him Friday in New York, Chuckie shared the achievement of which he's most proud.

"I did a Michael Jackson remix, which was really scary — to touch Michael Jackson vocals," Chuckie said. "I did this remix for this track 'Hollywood Tonight.' I couldn't say it for a minute: The label called me, and they said, 'You can't say nothing about this. It's kind of a secret project.' It's gonna come out anytime now."
"Hollywood Tonight" was originally produced by Teddy Riley for Jackson's posthumous Michael album, and Chuckie's mix of the song will be the sole official remix of the track.
"I will play it Miami," Chuckie revealed. "I told them this is the best week to launch the remix. So it feels really good. I'm the only one remixing that Michael Jackson track, and they are considering it a single. For me, especially, it's an honor to remix the King of Pop because he died on my birthday."
So, will the mix be a thundering Chuckie Dutch house banger or will it have a melodic progressive house feel, like his Marquee remix of Diddy-Dirty Money's "I Hate That You Love Me"? Well, according to the "Let the Bass Kick" producer, fans will be getting a healthy dose of both.
"I had to bring in the raucous," Chuckie confessed. "Yeah, I did the Chuckie flavor, but then again, I wanted to make it really musical, so I went progressive (house) on it."
Chuckie will be performing twice at Miami Music Week: at the Cr2 Records Party at Wall Lounge on Wednesday, and then headlining "No Sugar Added" at Nikki Beach on Friday.
Are you excited to hear Chuckie's remix of Michael Jackson's "Hollywood Tonight"? Let us know in the comments below!

Natalie Portman First Post-Baby Film Role: Playing Angela Lansbury's Mom?

Is Natalie Portman's maternity leave over? The actress, who gave birth to son Aleph in June, is reportedly in "informal" talks for the lead role in a new indie drama.

According to TheWrap, the 30-year-old Black Swan actress has been offered the starring role in Adaline, an indie film about a woman who stops aging after a strange accident. According to an earlier press release, the character "was killed in a car accident, until a simultaneous lightning strike resuscitated her and physiologically locked her in her late 20s. Adaline lives a solitary existence until she meets a man worth losing her immortality for." Katherine Heigl was originally attached to star, but dropped out in November.
While the film sounds cool, the news is surprising -- if only because Portman seemed so excited about taking a long maternity leave.
"I imagine I'm going to want to be home for years, just me and my baby," she told Newsweek in January. She did, however, note that her friends told her otherwise: "Everybody says after two months you go out of your mind."
Maybe Portman is being tempted by Adaline because of the rare opportunity to work with another great actress: Angela Lansbury. The 85-year-old actress -- who has five Tonys, 15 Emmy nominations and three Oscar nominations -- has taken only two film roles in the past decade. If Portman signs on to play the immortal lead character, she won't only get to star with Lansbury -- she'll get to play her mother! That's an offer she won't get again, and perhaps reason enough for husband Benjamin Millepied to stay home with the baby for awhile.
See our gallery of Natalie Portman's big year!

Taylor Swift, Rihanna Dress To Impress At Billboard Awards

Taylor Swift at the 2011 Billboard Music Awards

Photo: Jordan Strauss/ Getty Images

On Sunday night, some of the biggest names in the music industry hit up the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas and decided that sparkles and sequins make for the perfect additions to any red carpet get-up. Well, it is Sin City after all.
Taylor Swift always seems to bring some of that Nashville sparkle to any red carpet. She arrived at the show in a pale-hued, sequined Elie Saab gown. Nicki Minaj showed off her signature sense of style in her baby-blue, body-hugging spandex Mark Fast catsuit.
Selena Gomez turned up the style dial in a sexy, cut-out black Dolce & Gabbana gown that she paired with red strappy sandals with sparkly bow detailing. Like Gomez, Ke$ha opted for some cut-out detailing in her sparkly, slate-gray dress with tulle skirt. Rihanna looked white hot in her men's tailored Max Azria suit, which she kept sexy and feminine by not buttoning her shirt all the way.
Fergie went S&M chic in her little black bandage-type dress by Hervé Léger. Nicole Kidman also wore black. She paired a casual braid hairstyle with a long black gown and Keith Urban. British pop cutie Kyle Minogue looked funky in her little black lacey dress. Inside the show, Britney Spears sat in the audience wearing a skimpy black dress of her own, her hair in loose curls, with little-to-no accessories.
While some stars kept the color scheme low-key, Keri Hilson decided to stand out in her billowy little yellow dress paired with a turquoise-colored belt. Kelly Rowland showed off some of her best assets in a body-hugging, bright pink bandage dress.
The fellas also looked tight on the carpet. Joe Jonas wore all black with white sneakers, Ne-Yo paired his periwinkle suit with a Yankees cap and Justin Bieber wore black tuxedo pants with a gold-lamé tuxedo jacket.
Which stars' styles caught your eye at the Billboard Music Awards? Tell us in the comments.

Drake Responds To Lil Wayne's Jay-Z Dis

'That's a question for Wayne more than me,' Drizzy tells MTV News of apparent jabs on 'It's Good.'By Rob Markman

Drake

Photo: MTV News

LOS ANGELES -- If there is a Lil Wayne/Jay-Z beef brewing, Drake isn't indulging.

Although he is featured on Weezy's "It's Good" -- the leaked Carter IV track that finds Lil Tunechi throwing a subliminal shot in Hov's direction -- Drizzy downplayed any involvement.
"I just got a beat and did a verse over it," Drake told MTV News from the red carpet for the BMI Urban Awards in L.A. on Friday before he accepted the award for Songwriter of the Year. "Whatever any other individual has to say, you have to ask the man himself. I just did what I know how to do. I just got on a record. I heard the beat, did a verse and heard the final product."
On the song, VMA nominee Wayne raps, "Talkin' 'bout Baby money? I got your Baby money/ Kidnap yo' bitch, get that how-much-you-love-your-lady money." To the casual listener, the line doesn't sound like much, but fanatics can connect the lyric directly to Jay-Z's jab on the Throne's "H.A.M."
It all started in 2009 when Cash Money CEO Bryan "Baby" Williams objected to Jay-Z topping MTV News' Hottest MCs list for that year. "I don't think he the number one MC, in no kinda way," Baby said, casting the first stone. "Wayne is the best, he do the most and he make the most money. I don't think no n---a in the business make more money than us."
It took a few years, but Hov returned fire at the top of this year when he and Kanye leaked their first Watch the Throne track, claiming not only that Birdman and Wayne weren't seeing Jay-Z-caliber bucks, but that financially, they couldn't even compare to his wife, Beyoncé. "I'm like, 'Really, half-a-billi?' N---a, really, you got Baby money/ Keep it real with n---as, n---as ain't got my lady money," Jay lyrically retorted.
Wayne hinted at retaliation when he sat down with MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway in March. "Me and my wit, given my wit, I would probably play off of it," Wayne explained. "But I wouldn't make it a competition, because actually, the subject that he's talking about in that line, I can't box with the God. I'd be the first one to tell you that, given my wit, and the type of person that I am, I'd capitalize and I'd play off of it. Yeah, I definitely would."
And he definitely did. But when it comes to Weezy's response, in which he playfully threatened to kidnap Hov's lady and hold her for ransom, Drake didn't feel comfortable speaking for his YM mentor.
"At the end of the day, rap is an individual art," he said. "You express yourself and whatever you wanna say, you say it, so I guess that's a question for Wayne more than me."
In an August 25 interview with Vibe magazine, Wayne cryptically responded to a question about potential fallout form his track. "I know there won't be any repercussions behind what I did," Weezy boldly said. "I know for a fact music is about perception. You can't do anything but perceive what you hear. I know that for a fact. So I can't ever be upset about someone's reaction."
No word on whether Wayne will perform "It's Good" when he touches the VMA main stage on Sunday, but whatever happens, the YMCMB camp is promising a rock-star performance.
What do you think of Lil Wayne and Jay-Z's lyrical beef? Will Hov respond? Tell us in the comments.
The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It's still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple's mobile platform. And it's even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple's tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you're searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as "touch and decide," Bing Voice Search is also built in -- making it easy to start a query without using the iPad's on-screen keyboard.

Cloud Girlfriend will use a swarm of females to satisfy men

Cloud Girlfriend, despite what it sounds like, doesn't really have anything to do with cloud computing. Rather, it uses a cloud of women to pose as your girlfriend on Facebook, or your favorite social network of choice. The service is scheduled to launch 'soon,' and there's no indication of how much it will cost.

With the tagline 'The easiest way to get a girlfriend is to already have one,' Cloud Girlfriend promises to be a very interesting startup indeed. The brains of the operation, David Fuhriman, speaking to CNET, says it's all about fulfilling Maslow's hierarchy of needs. "CloudGirlfriend.com can fulfill Maslow's higher needs, even though the users know that the interaction is virtual. They will interact with a real person and see real profile images of the girl with whom they interact. This interaction can build confidence and esteem as well as provide real training experiences in navigating a friendship and a relationship."

Our concern, of course, is that it's very nearly April 1. We're also worried by the fact that Fuhriman has a name that sounds ominously like a social subculture that we've grown strangely attracted to here in the Download Squad bunker.

Finally, just stop and think about it for a second. Because your cloud girlfriend will be entirely virtual, she could be based anywhere. She could be underage -- or overage -- or she might be someone who you know in real life. She could even be a relative of yours, and you'd never know.

Let's not forget this is the Internet we're talking about, folks. Worst case scenario, she could turn out to be a hairy, male truck driver from Texas. Such as... your dad, perhaps?Cloud Girlfriend will use a swarm of females to satisfy men originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 06:30:00 EST. You might remember Rob Spence, known online as the Eyeborg for his project to create a working bionic eye. We wrote about him before, and interviewed him a while back, but the project has advanced to the point where even a seasoned tech blogger is left speechless with amazement.

Spence has worked with a team of engineers to adapt an endoscope into a working in-socket video camera. It's turned on by waving a magnet near it, at which point it will begin transmitting a wireless video signal to a handheld LCD viewer. Absolutely incredible. Watch the video inside.

MotoGP Riders Still Worried About Racing At Motegi: Hayden, Lorenzo, Rossi And Spies Speak Out

With the Japanese round of MotoGP at Motegi now just five weeks away, it is getting close to crunch time for the riders to decide whether they are going to race at the circuit or not. The report on the radiation situation at Motegi commissioned by Dorna has been presented to the riders and the teams, and everyone has had some time to digest the report. Some teams have already made clear that they will be attending the race - the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha team made an official announcement at Brno, and Jorge Martinez of the Aspar team said earlier this week that his teams would be attending the race in Japan - but many teams have not yet made a decision.
The problem for the undecided riders centers around the situation at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, where continues on bringing the damaged reactors under control and cooling the plant. This issue was not addressed in the report, and with the media reporting both every new earthquake and every incidence of high radioactivity found at or near the plant - though maintaining a deafening silence on the progress being made towards getting the plant under control - fear of the situation is still running high among the riders.

Beyonce Serves Up Intimate Performance In NYC

With no costume changes or elaborate set switch-ups, singer performed entire 4 album alongside her biggest hits.By Jocelyn Vena

Beyoncé (file)

Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images

Beyoncé played her second of four nights at New York's Roseland Ballroom on Tuesday night, presenting an ear-popping event that served as a cabaret act featuring a ferocious mix of old favorites and new tracks from her album 4.
Billed as an intimate night with the superstar, the show feautured B in a sparkly silver dress, backed by a full-on orchestra and several backup dancers. No costume changes, no elaborate set changes. The real star was B's never-miss-a-note voice and her razzle-dazzle dance moves.
During the first part of the night, Beyoncé gave fans some of the inside stories behind her biggest hits, ranging from her early beginnings with Destiny's Child to her breakout moments as a solo artist. Her swagger never faltered and was evident when she spouted lines like "On April 4, 2008, somebody put a ring on it," before launching into her hit "Single Ladies." Before that revealing moment, Beyoncé sang bits and pieces of her biggest hits like "Bootylicious," "Survivor," "Bills, Bills, Bills," and "Crazy in Love." No stone was left unturned.
The night, however, was really all about 4. She ran through the entire album, displaying her panache for old-school performing the likes of Tina Turner or Diana Ross. During ballads like "1+1," "I Care" and the show-closing "End of Time," Queen B's vocal abilities outshined it all.
It was her ability to throw a party during faster jams like "Party," "Countdown," "End of Time" and "Run the World (Girls)" that put on full display her range as a performer, dancing and singing live the entire night. Her fans sang along to every word and their energy for the material was only matched by Beyoncé's enthusiasm for live performance.

Trio of US Samsung Galaxy S II models get together for a group photo?

Gaze closely at the above picture. Is this classy-looking bunch of phones the actual trio of Galaxy S II devices we expect to see unveiled at Samsung's press event this coming Monday? If so, our mouths are commencing salivation as we speak. From the looks of it, the Samsung Hercules, Epic Touch 4G and Attain are shown off hanging out together in full disclosure. Granted, we've seen the T-Mobile and Sprint versions before, so this image simply verifies what we've already seen. The big reveal, however, is the look of AT&T's variant -- a device that's managed to do the best job at playing hide-and-seek -- which appears to be eerily similar to a leaked render we encountered in June. We're only a matter of days away from knowing for sure, but this will definitely get your weekend started off on the right foot.Trio of US Samsung Galaxy S II models get together for a group photo? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Aug 2011 16:46:00 EDT. Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, John Paul Jones Unveil Supergroup

Them Crooked Vultures make their debut with a post-Lollapalooza set.By James Montgomery

Dave Grohl (file)

Photo: Jewel Samad/AFP/Getty Images

Officially, Lollapalooza ended Sunday night in Chicago's Grant Park, with dueling sets from the Killers and Jane's Addiction. Unofficially, it ended very early Monday morning, across town at venerable rock club the Metro, with a surprise show by Them Crooked Vultures.
To the unfamiliar, the Vultures might seem like an odd choice to close out Lolla weekend ... until you realize that they're made up of Foo Fighters frontman/ former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones. And their gig at the Metro was their world premiere.
According to some reports, the Vultures actually turned down Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell's request to replace the Beastie Boys as headliners at the festival, opting to debut in front of some 1,100 super-psyched fans at the Metro, rather than 75,000 in Grant Park (tickets for the gig were announced via Foo Fighter/ QOTSA fan clubs). Meaning that, in a lot of ways, this was the most sought-after ticket in town.
Taking the stage just after midnight, the Vultures — Grohl on drums (of course), Homme on guitar and vocals, Jones on bass and keys and frequent QOTSA contributor Alain Johannes on guitar — ripped through 12 songs in 80 minutes, all taken from their upcoming debut, which may or may not be called Never Deserved the Future, and may or may not be hitting stores on October 23 (early "promo" videos touting both those facts were revealed over the weekend to be hoaxes perpetrated by QOTSA fans).
The songs, with appropriately Homme-ian titles like "Scumbag Blues," "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)," "Caligulove" and "Interlude w/Ludes," sounded pretty much how you'd expect, given the band's pedigree. They rocked, hard — Chicago Tribune critic Greg Kot described them as "fresh, invigorating and just plain nasty" — delving off into psychedelic, reverb-filled excursions and exploring proggy territory, "both of the old-school Yes variety, and the more modern Tool flavor," according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Jim DeRogatis.
It's not known if Monday's Metro performance was a one-off event for the Vultures — there have been whispers of a full-blown tour, but a spokesperson for Homme had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time. Nor was it clear whether or not they'll have an album out in October.
Early Monday, a Crooked Vultures Twitter account, which had previously posted links to the band's official-looking Web site and the Metro's online ticketing site — posted a link to what appears to be the group's first bit of official merchandise: a Deserve the Future T-shirt. Cost: $30.

Microsoft trumpets Windows Phone 7 numbers on first birthday

Happy first birthday, Windows Phone 7! One year on, and the fledgling mobile operating system has 36,000 active developers in its AppHub community, 1.5 million downloads of its Developer Tools, and 11,500 apps in its Marketplace.

Microsoft is quick to take a couple shots at competitors' app stores, beating its chest about not re-counting tanslations of an app or "lite" apps, "increasing tonnage" by supporting apps from other mobile platforms, and not listing wallpapers as a category.

That's all fine and dandy, but we spend a lot of time sifting through WP7 app feeds -- and we're still not seeing a lot of awesome apps on the platform. We think a few marquee apps would've made a pretty nice first birthday present -- along with a much smoother update process for WP7 users.Microsoft trumpets Windows Phone 7 numbers on first birthday originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 11:00:00 EST. UFC on Versus 5 postfight: Lytle wins bonuses, WEC fighters entertain and Hardy keeps his job

MILWAUKEE -- Some notes from the UFC on Versus 5 post-fight press conference:
-- UFC president Dana White announced the bonuses on Twitter before the press conference. Chris Lytle won both Submission of the Night and Fight of the Night, netting him $130,000 and a Harley-Davidson. Dan Hardy picked up $65,000 for his half of the Fight of the Night performance, and Donald Cerrone won $65,000 for his Knockout of the Night of Charles Oliveira.
-- UFC chairman Lorenzo Fertitta tweeted that he has no plans to cut Hardy, despite his four-fight losing skid. He said, "I like guys that WAR."
"It's a nice vote of confidence from the boss. I love being a part of the organization. If they are going to give me one more fight, I need to come back reinvented," Hardy said.
-- Lytle admitted that he was surprised that Hardy shot in on him during the final minutes of the fight. He said it was an instinct to reach for the guillotine.
"He's one of the toughest guys I've been in there with. I threw a lot of hard shots on him and it didn't stop him," Lytle said of Hardy.
-- Ben Henderson doesn't know where he would rank in the very crowded UFC lightweight title picture.
"It's not my place to say I'm no. 7, no. 21. You guys tell me. What does Dana think? What does Sean Shelby think?" Henderson said.
-- Though his job is safe, Dan Hardy plans to give himself some time away from fights to improve.
"I think my head is elsewhere right now. I think I'm going to step away and clear my mind a bit. I had quickest rise and quickest fall in the UFC," Hardy said.
-- Henderson paid tribute to his teammates by getting on his knees and begging UFC brass to take a look at the other fighters in the gym, a completely selfless act for a fighter who could reasonably be using his post-fight speech to ask for a title shot. Henderson was predictably humble when asked about it.
"We're not alone in that cage. We have training partners who bleed with us. They're our brothers. If not for those guys, I wouldn't be where I'm at. Life like a fighter is life like a starving artist, and I just want them to get a shot. I will stand behind them."
-- Jim Miller had questioned the readiness of WEC fighters when the UFC first merged with the organization. Donald Cerrone and Henderson, both WEC vets, smiled at that fact.
"I think the little brothers just beat up the big brothers!" Cerrone said.

Google Chrome now uses SPDY HTTP replacement, halves page load time

We're not entirely sure of the time line here, but it looks like Google has now rolled out the SPDY HTTP replacement to its full bevy of Web services, including Gmail, Docs, and YouTube. If you're currently using Google's Chrome browser you're probably already using SPDY.

We originally reported on SPDY way back in November 2009, when Google introduced it as yet another experiment in making the Web faster, like Go, Native Client and speculative pre-connections. Over the last 18 months, though, SPDY support has found its way into the stable build of Chrome.

SPDY is basically a streamlined and more efficient version of HTTP. At its most basic, SPDY introduces parallel, multiplexed streams over a single TCP connection -- but at the same time, SPDY allows for prioritization, so that vital content (HTML) can be sent before periphery content (JavaScript, video). All in all, the SPDY protocol can halve page load times, which is obviously rather significant.

The best bit, though, is that SPDY is an open-source project. HTTP 1.1 is a lumbering beast that needs to be replaced before low-latency real-time computing really becomes a reality, and SPDY is one of the best options currently on the table. To be honest, we're not sure why SPDY hasn't received more coverage -- it's awesome in every way. At the moment, though, the only way to help speed up SPDY's proliferation, is with an experimental Apache mod.

As far as actually 'trying it out,' your best bet is downloading Chrome, hitting up some Google sites, and then checking chrome://net-internals to see your active SPDY sessions. SPDY is a transparent replacement for HTTP, though, and as such it's rather hard to see its effects. Google's sites definitely feel fast in Chrome, but there are more technologies than just SPDY at work.Google Chrome now uses SPDY HTTP replacement, halves page load time originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 07:00:00 EST. Are Kim Kardashian & Kris Humphries Having Another Wedding in NYC?

Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries are said to be setting up their newlywed nest in New York City, and rumors are swirling that they're planning to have another over-the-top wedding bash in the city that never sleeps.
But, according to the new Mrs. Humphries, though a party is definitely in the works, it is not another matrimonial reception. "There are rumors of a 2nd wedding in NY. This is NOT true!!" Kim twittered on Monday. "Our friends Jason Binn & Colin Cowie are throwing us a welcome to NY party!"
Ok, so there's not going to anymore exchanging of vows, but that doesn't mean the Aug. 31 bash won't be a party to remember. According to the New York Post's Page Six, famed event planner Cowie has put together quite the plan for the couple, who tied the knot on Aug. 20. The fete will have a color scheme of olive, black and white, and expected guests include Humphries’ New Jersey Nets teammates.
Kim, 30, and Kris, 26, reportedly jetted off to Europe for a quick mini-honeymoon, before heading back to N.Y.C., where they are moving into their penthouse suite at the Gansevoort Park Avenue. Kim begins filming the second season of Kim & Kourtney Take New York later this week.

Google bids $900 million for Nortel's patents to protect against litigation trolls

Nortel, once one of the biggest telecoms company in the world but now in the death throes of bankruptcy, has selected Google's $900 million bid for its patent portfolio as the stalking horse bid. This doesn't mean that Google will automatically win Nortel's massive array of telecoms patents, but it does mean that Google is the preferred buyer.

Google, which has a history of lobbying for patent law reform, has been the target of many patent litigation suits. Google's relative infancy means that it has a lot less patents in the vault than big-hitters like Microsoft, Oracle and IBM, and buying Nortel's portfolio of 6,000 patents could provide better protection against patent litigation in the future. It's worth noting that both Apple and RIM have showed interested in the portfolio, too.

Mashable speculates that the patents -- which are nearly all telecoms-related -- will be used to defend against Oracle's attacks on Android's use of Java. We reckon that Google is simply looking to cover its future endeavors in the world of networking. In the absence of patent law reform, and continued threats to net neutrality, owning a bunch of telecoms patents sounds like a very sensible move.Google bids $900 million for Nortel's patents to protect against litigation trolls originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 04 Apr 2011 13:30:00 EST. BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

A leaked early version of RIM's upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. All that's really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There's no guarantee this app hasn't been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.Continue reading BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leakBlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 08:00:00 EST. Firefox 4 Friday: 25 million downloads, anti-aliasing, and how to make it look like Firefox 3

If you've had your head under a rock for the last few days, here's this week's Firefox news in brief: Firefox 4 was finally released.

Yes, 13 months after the initial release of Firefox 3.7 alpha 1 and four more alpha builds, a renumbering to 4.0 and 12 beta releases, and finally a release candidate (or two), Firefox 4 has been released into the wild.

Just like every other Firefox release, initial reception for the new browser has been nothing short of insane. 7.1 million downloads were registered in the first 24 hours and the download rate continued to accelerate, clocking in more than 15 million downloads after two days. At the time of writing, three days in, Firefox 4 has been downloaded over 25 million times. A Battle Is Under Way For The Forests Of Borneo

Indonesia has suffered serious deforestation in recent decades. Nowhere is the problem illustrated more starkly than the island of Borneo, where economic development and indigenous cultures are clashing and it's unclear whether conservation efforts are too late.

UFC reportedly has deal with FOX; Network has big press conference announcement set for Thursday

The rumor merry-go-round continues to twirl with regards to the UFC and a new television deal.
First it was the Wall Street Journal reporting that Zuffa (parent company to the UFC) was closing in on a deal with Comcast/NBC. Now Sport Business Daily says FOX has stepped up to grab the mixed martial arts giant in a package that could be worth as much as $90 million per year.
In what would represent a major push into the mainstream for the UFC, Fox has agreed to a deal that will see the broadcast channel air as many as four MMA events per year, according to several sources. The multiyear deal would mark the first time the UFC will have consistent airtime on a broadcast network. Fox execs refused to comment on the deal, but sources with knowledge of the negotiations said bidding had gone as high as $90M per year. The Fox deal is believed to be for seven or eight years.
UPDATE: John Ourand from SBJ tweeted that FOX has a major announcement on the way later this week.

UFC president Dana White wouldn't confirm the deal to MMAjunkie.
"You guys will know when we have a TV deal," said White.
White appeared with Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole on Friday's "MMA Insiders" on ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas.
"We do not have a deal. We're out there talking to everybody. When you're out there talking to everybody there's going to be lots of rumors," White said (19:10 mark). "In a perfect world, what would really work out great is if you could be on CBS and FOX and Comcast/NBC. Just like the NFL is. That would be the perfect world, but this sport has a lot of room to grow."
White has been very selective over the years with the UFC's programming partners.
"I will not do a dumb deal. We're not going to do a deal that doesn't make sense. We could've been the first mixed martial arts on network television, but none of the deals made sense," White said. "And as you saw all those guys [that were on network TV like EliteXC on CBS] ended up going out of business."

The UFC has been looking for a multi-platform deal. The promotion would like programming on network TV and several cable channels. Currently, it's running live fights and additional programming with preview shows and past fights on Spike and Versus. That will change in a deal with FOX.
As part of the deal, most of the weekly programming that UFC has on Versus and Spike TV will move to FX starting in January. That includes several fight cards, plus shows like the reality series "The Ultimate Fighter." Fox-owned Fuel also will wind up with some UFC content. But rumors that Fox will rebrand Fuel as a UFC channel are not true, sources said. Fox was attracted to UFC programming, which has produced some of the highest viewership figures -- and most attractive demos -- on Versus and Spike TV.
According to SBJ, Viacom-owned Spike dropped out of the bidding because of lagging numbers:
The UFC's talks with Viacom-owned Spike ended before that. Sources said Spike ultimately passed over concern that its UFC shoulder programming stopped growing. Shows like "Unleashed," "Knockouts" and "Countdown" averaged 1 million viewers in '05. This year, they are averaging 492,000. Spike holds the rights to UFC library programming through '12, including old fights and shoulder programming such as "UFC Unleashed."
The most recent live event on Versus actually trended up at UFC on Versus 5.
UFC's Sunday night eventin Milwaukee on Versus also drew 766,000 viewers from 9:00-11:09pm ET, marking the net's most-viewed program for the week ending August 14. That figure is up 3% from 744,000 viewers for the last UFC event on Versus on June 26.

Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

While we've still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they've discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It's a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there's a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme's wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7 originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 07:40:00 EST.
